Ranchi, May 16: As many as six prisoners escaped during treatment from the only state-run hospital in Jharkhand, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), in the past two years.
A short visit to the prisoner ward at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences revealed that the security system is very poor where the door remains open and anyone can easily enter the ward.
Sources at RIMS said that policemen bring the prisoner to get treatment and themselves get busy with other work. Taking advantage of this, the prisoners escape the hospital premises.
When asked about the security arrangements at the hospital for the prisoners coming from treatment, RIMS Public Relations Officer Dr Dipendra Kumar Sinha said that adequate security arrangements are there in the prison ward of RIMS, but during treatment, they have to be taken to different parts of the hospital during which they tend to flee.
“Prisoners come here in tight security for different kinds of treatment including surgery for which they cannot be kept in the prisoner ward for treatment. During their stay in different wards including ICU, they manage to dodge the policemen to escape the hospital premises,” Dr Sinha added.
However, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Sailesh Tripathi denied commenting on the issue.
Last month, prisoner MS Warish managed to escape from Dr Mrityunjay’s ward. Two constables were deployed to protect the prisoner. As soon as both of them went to the washroom, Warish left the ward after getting the opportunity. The prisoner was admitted to RIMS by the police due to stomach ache.
Earlier, 19-year-old prisoner Pintu Kumar had also escaped from RIMS, while defying the police. Pintu being mentally ill-managed to dodge the police.
