Dhanbad, May 27: Residents of coal mines and surrounding areas will now not suffer from damages from coal mining blasts in the colliery.
IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad team of mining engineering department has made a successful groundbreaking research that would give prior information of impact to be occurred from triggering blast in mines.
The research team comprises Anurag Agrawal (a PhD scholar) and two other members of the faculty BS Choudhary (Agrawal’s research guide) and senior faculty Dr VMSR Murthy (as part of the research) have researched to avoid adverse effects on the community as well as in mining area from the blast.
“The research device would not only give prior information of seismic energy released during a blast in mines but also suggests the design to optimize seismic energy,” said the member of the research team.
Sources said the research team of the IIT ISM engineering department has completed the research in nine months of comprehensive work and conducted successful experiments in coal mines of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) Dhanbad, Dolomite mines in Gaya district of Bihar and clay rock in Rajasthan.
Massive damage to houses of people residing in the surrounding colliery area following mining through blasting in the Jharia coalfield of Dhanbad district is a perennial problem. Hardly any day passes when affected residents do not protest the blasting and stop the mining process of outsourcing companies in different areas of Bharat Coking Coal Limited. Sometimes police and CISF have to intervene to control the agitated affected residents.
“This research of ISM IIT engineering department would save life and property of thousands of residents of Jharia coalfield as daily erratic blasts in colliery not only trembles the room in sleeping but also cause cracks in the house,” said a Ranjit Kumar Singh of Jharia.
