New Delhi, May 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to support women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) in his monthly radio show Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, saying that doing so ‘would also provide fuel to the self-reliant India movement.’

SHGs encourage women empowerment and give fuel to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan,’ the Prime Minister remarked, highlighting the country’s artisan community’s potential.

“A few days ago I found an interesting and attractive thing which is full of colours and creativity of the countrymen and their artistic talent. It is a gift sent to me by an SHG from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu,” said PM Modi.

“This gift bears the fragrance of Indianness and the blessings of Matri-Shakti – a glimpse of her affection for me. This is a special Thanjavur Doll, which also has a GI Tag. I offer special thanks to the Thanjavur Self-Help Group for sending me this gift imbued with the local culture,” he added.

Women’s SHG stores and kiosks are also popping up in Thanjavur, according to him. Many poor families’ life have changed as a result, according to PM Modi, who said that with the help of such kiosks and stores, women can now sell their items directly to clients.

He stated that the effort is called ‘Tharagaigal Kaivinai Porutkal Virpanai Angadi,’ and that it is supported by 22 Self-Help Groups.
