Jamshedpur, Aug 2: An accountant of the Department of Rural Development posted at Chakradharpur in West Singhbhum was arrested by ACB (Anti Corruption Bureau) on Wednesday.
Identified as Saroj Kumar, the accountant was nabbed while he was taking Rs 1.4 lakhs as a bribe from a contractor.
The contractor who had bagged a contract for laying paver blocks on a road in Chakradharpur sub-division had lodged a complaint with the ACB’s divisional office in Jamshedpur after the accused had demanded a hefty amount for releasing funds for the project.
The bribe amount to be paid by the contractor was finalised at Rs 1.4 lakhs
On receiving the contract, the ACB had got the deal verified and then only asked the contractor to go ahead for paying the bribe.
This afternoon, when the contractor paid Rs 1.4 lakhs to the accountant at the latter’s office, a team of ACB sleuths who were around there, swooped over the accountant and seized the bribe money. The accountant was also taken into custody immediately.
The arrested accountant has been brought to the ACB’s divisional office for interrogation.
It may be mentioned here that a cashier of the Special Division had been arrested by the ACB for taking Rs 50,000 as a bribe from a government-run high school functionary in West Singhbhum a month ago.
