Jamshedpur, July 14: Cashier of the Special Division executive engineer office, Chaibasa was arrested by ACB (Anti Corruption Bureau) for taking Rs 50,000 as a bribe on Friday.
The arrested cashier, Bhabataran Singh had demanded Rs 50,000 from a functionary of a government-run high school at Roladih Panchayat of West Singhbhum district’s Manjhari block for releasing funds meant for the school’s development.
A fund of Rs 12.46 lakhs had come to the Special Division for setting up a changing room and drinking water facility for the school children a month ago. The school authority had assigned Nirakar Birua to deal with the Special Division’s executive engineer office located in the district headquarters at Chaibasa.
For releasing the fund, the cashier had first demanded Rs 99,000 and had later come down to Rs 60,000 as a bribe, which Birua did not want to pay. The cashier subsequently fixed the bribe amount at Rs 50,000, declaring that he would not come down further.
Having finalised the bribe amount to be paid, Birua who is a key functionary of the school had on July 12 approached the ACB by travelling to its divisional office at Sonari in Jamshedpur and lodged a complaint.
As per the instructions given by the ACB, Birua paid the cashier Rs 50,000 and as the bundle of currency notes changed hands, a team of ACB which was around swooped over the cashier and caught him red-handed.
According to ACB sources, the arrested cashier has been taken to the bureau’s headquarters in Ranchi after his stopover in its Sonari office.
