New Delhi, July 22: Two farms at Mananthavady in Kerala’s Wayanad district have been reported to have African swine fever, according to officials.
Following testing of the samples at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal, the disease was identified in the pigs from two farms in the district.
According to a spokesperson for the Animal Husbandry Department, the samples were sent for testing after a large number of pigs at one of the farms perished.
“Now the test result has confirmed the infection. Directions have been issued to cull 300 pigs of the second farm,” the official said.
The Department reported that measures are being taken to stop the sickness from spreading. After receiving a warning from the Center that African swine flu had been reported in Bihar and a few northeastern states, the state had earlier this month enhanced bio-security procedures.
Notably, a highly contagious and lethal viral disease that affects domestic pigs is known as African swine fever.
