Dumka, Oct 7: In yet another shocking incident a 22-year-old girl was set ablaze allegedly by her ex-boyfriend last night at Bharatpur village under Jarmundi police station of the district. The girl has been admitted to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH).
Two persons including the maternal grandmother and uncle are also reported to have sustained burn injuries while attempting to save the victim girl while engulfed in the fire.
The victim girl has been identified as Maruti Kumari of Bhairopur village under the neighbouring Jama police station of the district who was staying at her maternal grandparents’ home.
Sources quoting the victim’s statement procured to the police in the presence of a magistrate at the PJMCH said that she was asleep after returning from the Dussehra fair in the night when the accused namely Rajesh Rout of Baliya village under Ramgarh police station of the district broke into the house and set her on fire and escaped.
The victim girl has also reportedly to claimed to have identified the accused while escaping after setting her on the blaze. She said that he intended to continue the affair with her despite having been married several months back.
Police said the matter was being investigated to ascertain the actual reason behind the motive of the accused to commit the crime.
“The incident prima facie appears to have been related to the love affair between the victim and the accused,” the inspector cum officer-in-charge of the Jarmundi police station said, adding that attempts were on to nab the accused.
Meanwhile, the victim girl has been referred from the PJMCH considering the severity of her injuries with arrangements being made to shift her to RIMS Ranchi.
Senior administrative and police officials rushed to the PJMCH to take stock of the victim’s condition and handed over Rs one lakh to her family members for the needful expenses to be made during her treatment.
This is for the second time in quick succession that such a horrific incident took place in the district.
Earlier, a 16-year-old schoolgirl was victimised the same way one month back by a youth belonging to her neighbourhood in Jaruadih Mohalla of the sub-capital town who however succumbed to her burn injuries while being treated at RIMS which has sparked large-scale outrage.
The accused Shahrukh and another accomplice Naeem Khan alias Chhotu are facing a court trial by a fast-track court.
