AIIMS Deoghar observes World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

Deoghar, Oct 8: World Hospice & Palliative Care Day was celebrated at AIIMS, Deoghar on Saturday.

Professor Saurabh Varshney, Executive Director of AIIMS Deoghar expressed concern over the absence of palliative services in the Santhal Pargana plateau and said that AIIMS Deoghar would bring a new ray of hope to the patients suffering from serious ailments by bringing these services to the region.

Palliative care is important for critically ill patients (those suffering from diseases such as cancer, AIDS, or any prolonged illness). In this, not only the physical sufferings of the patients are taken care of but along with it, psychosocial, spiritual and emotional sufferings are also addressed.

In the program, Chief of BRAICH, AIIMS New Delhi & National Cancer Institute, Jhajjar- Professor Sushma Bhatnagar, President, IAPC spoke about the importance of palliative care and integration with other branches of medicine and oncology.

Along with this, Advocacy letters were also sent to the health secretaries of the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar to develop palliative care in their states.

Professor Raghu Thota and Professor Jayita Deodhar from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai also discussed various about cancer pain and bereavement support.

Dr Kahkasha, Dr Rishabh Jaju, Dr Dharmendra, Dr Amiya Arnav and Nursing Tutor Kusum and Jharana also discussed various issues related to palliative care. Story writing, quiz and poster competitions were also organized in the event.
