Ranchi, Jan 31: The Central Government has released the report of the All India Survey on Higher Education for the year 2020-21. The report reveals that there has been a decrease in the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education located in Jharkhand.
According to this, the gross ratio in Jharkhand was 20.9 in 2019-20, which has come down to 17 in 2020-21. At the same time, the ratio in terms of the nation has increased from 25.6 to 27.3. The average gross ratio in Jharkhand is 16.5 wherein, it is 17.5 for boys and 17 for girls.
As per the report, total enrolment in Jharkhand was 5,91,725; which is more than Chhatisgarh and is around the data from Odisha, however, it is also lower than the data from UP and Bihar.
Furthermore, as per the report, Jharkhand enrolled 3,93,349 male and 3,93,338 female students in 2020-21, making the enrollment ratio 16.5 for boys and 17.5 for girls. On the other hand, in 2019-20 the numbers were 4,08,859 male and 4,08,701 female students making the enrollment ratio 17.5 for boys and 18.7 for girls. Meanwhile, on a national level, the enrollment ratio of boys in colleges is 16.5, while that of girls is 17.5.
The report also expressed concern over the condition and number of teachers. In Jharkhand, instead of one teacher for 20 students, there is one teacher for 55 students. Meanwhile, there is one teacher for 24 students as per data for the nation.
Meanwhile, the ratio is better in Chhattisgarh, UP and Odisha, where there is one teacher for 29, 39 and 24 students respectively. While, the ratio is worse in Bihar, where there are 66 students for every teacher.
In terms of colleges, there are nine colleges per one lakh population in Jharkhand, while there are 31 colleges per one lakh population in the country. As a result, due to the lack of colleges, the masses of students taking admission are larger in Jharkhand. Here, Jharkhand’s college enrollment is 1761, while the country’s average enrollment is 646.
The report further mentions that as compared to its neighbouring states Jharkhand has 32 universities, which is similar to, or around the number of universities in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. UP, on the other hand, has a higher number of universities. Meanwhile, Jharkhand has the lowest number of colleges both government and private as compared to the numbers of the neighbouring states including UP, Bihar, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
