New Delhi: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is set to travel to Moscow this week for critical discussions aimed at facilitating peace between Russia and Ukraine, according to sources. The visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent diplomatic engagements with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as India intensifies its efforts to broker peace in the ongoing conflict.
Prime Minister Modi, who visited both nations in the past two months, has been actively advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Shortly after his visit to Ukraine and a meeting with President Zelensky, the Prime Minister held a phone call with President Putin on August 27. During the conversation, Modi shared insights from his visit to Kyiv and emphasized India’s commitment to resolving the conflict through diplomatic and political means.
It was during this phone call that the two leaders agreed that NSA Ajit Doval would travel to Moscow to engage in peace talks. While details of Doval’s visit remain undisclosed, the move is part of India’s broader efforts to mediate and support a peaceful resolution to the war.
A statement from the Russian Embassy following the phone call mentioned that President Putin provided his assessment of the situation in Ukraine and Russia’s approach to resolving the conflict. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Modi had underlined the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in achieving a lasting peace.
The Prime Minister reiterated India’s steadfast commitment to supporting an “early, abiding, and peaceful resolution” on social media platform X. He also highlighted India’s stance that it has always been on the side of peace, not neutrality, in this conflict.
Last month, Prime Minister Modi visited Ukraine and held talks with President Zelensky, where the two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict and Modi’s peace-oriented stance. Zelensky expressed appreciation for India’s diplomatic efforts, and both leaders honored the memory of children affected by the war, calling for the safety of children worldwide.
President Putin has acknowledged India’s efforts to resolve the conflict, naming India, along with China and Brazil, as key countries in discussions over the war. Other global leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have also expressed hope that India can play a crucial role in mediating the conflict.
India has consistently advocated for peace, with Prime Minister Modi stressing that “this is not an era of war.” As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to divide global powers, India’s diplomatic efforts remain focused on fostering peace through dialogue and international cooperation.
