Hazaribagh, Oct 25: Akash Pandit of Giridih and Sarah Sharma of East Singhbhum (Jamshedpur) dominated the State Under-19 badminton by winning double crowns in the championship which concluded at Hazaribagh last evening.
Akash Pandit defeated Emmanuel J Kujur of West Singhbhum by 21-16, 21-14 in the boys final while in the girls’ final event, Sarah Sharma of Jamshedpur beat Anisha Mishra (Jamshedpur) by 21-14, 21-13.
Earlier, at the under-19 championship, Akash Pandit and Sarah Sharma won the mixed doubles title by defeating Kunal Patel and Pragya J Bodra (both from Jamshedpur) 21-11, 21-15 in the final match.
Akash Pandit has emerged as the undisputed king of the state badminton by winning singles as well as mixed doubles in both senior and under -19 State Badminton Championship. Last week, he bagged both singles and mixed doubles titles in the Senior State Badminton Championship held at Dumka (October 18 to 20).
The pair of Emmauel J Kujur (Jamshedpur) and Priyanshu Tirkey (Gumla) annexed the boys’ doubles title by beating the pair of Aman Rahman and Ayaan Rahman (both from Ranchi) by 21-19, 21-16 in the final match.
DIG Dipak Verma was the chief guest in the final ceremony and he along with Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police (SP), C Manoj Ratan and Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) Abhay Kumar Sinha, gave away prizes to the successful players.
Hazaribagh Badminton Association’s General Secretary cum Jharkhand Badminton Association’s Joint Secretary, Yashvir Jaggi, coordinated the function. Participants across the state highly appreciated the arrangements in the championship.
“This was the first time that the players were provided free of cost and standard breakfast, lunch and dinners. The organizing committee members, especially the general secretary, Yashvir Jaggi, cared for the players like a guardian,” said Shruti, a player.
