Islamabad, June 5: Security forces have been placed on high alert in Islamabad’s surrounding districts amid rumours of a conspiracy to assassinate former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, according to news agency ANI.
In light of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s scheduled visit to Bani Gala, a spokesperson for the Islamabad police stated Section 144 had already been implemented in Pakistan’s capital and meetings had been outlawed.
“In view of the expected arrival of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in Bani Gala, which is a residential area located in Islamabad, security in the area has been beefed up and a high alert has been sounded. However, until now Islamabad Police has not received any confirmed news of return from Imran Khan’s team,” Islamabad Police said in a tweet.
Imran Khan has been attempting to corner the incoming government on the economic crises and inflation, both of which were exacerbated during his tenure as Prime Minister.
Imran Khan would be in Islamabad on Sunday, according to PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary, a former minister in the previous government. In April, Chaudhary claimed that security agents had discovered a ‘plan’ to assassinate Khan. PTI leader Faisal Vawda had previously made similar claims of a plot to kill Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over his refusal to ‘sell the country.’
Hassaan Niazi, Khan’s nephew, has threatened an ‘aggressive response’ if the former prime minister is killed.
