New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah confidently predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will once again come to power in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at the inauguration of the Nyay Setu water supply project, Shah assured supporters that the NDA, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will secure another term despite opposition efforts.
“I assure you, let the opposition do whatever it wants, in 2029 NDA will come, Modi ji will come. They do not realize that the BJP has won more seats in this election than the Congress did in three elections combined,” Shah declared.
Shah addressed the opposition’s claims of instability, asserting that not only will the current government complete its term, but the NDA will also form the next government. “Be ready to sit in the opposition and learn the way of working there properly,” Shah stated, as quoted by ANI.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 240 seats, a drop from its 2019 tally of 303. Despite this, the NDA managed to form the government with the support of allies such as the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal (United). Narendra Modi is currently serving his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, a feat only previously achieved by India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The opposition INDIA bloc put up a strong fight in the 2024 elections, winning more than 230 seats. The Congress party notably improved its performance, winning 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019. This was the Congress’s best performance in 15 years, with the party last securing 206 seats in the 2009 general elections.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP saw a significant drop in seats, from 62 in 2019 to 33 in 2024. Its pre-poll allies, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Apna Dal (SP), won two and one seat respectively. The BJP and its allies had previously won 73 seats in 2014 and 64 seats in 2019.
