In Andhra Pradesh’s Satya Sai district on Thursday morning, a high-tension electric line fell on an auto rickshaw carrying at least seven persons, causing it to catch fire and burn to death.

Around 7am, an auto rickshaw carrying an unknown number of agricultural labourers crashed into an electric pole nearby Chillakondaiah Palli hamlet in the Tadimarri block, causing high-tension wires to fall on the vehicle.

“Within seconds, the entire vehicle went up in flames. Some of the passengers, including the driver, jumped out of the vehicle, others were caught and were charred to death,” Tadimarri sub-inspector police D Laxminarayana said.

The electrical department staff was alerted by the residents and turned off the power supply to prevent additional casualties. Along with the townspeople and revenue personnel, the police arrived on the scene quickly and started the rescue efforts.
