New Delhi, Aug 3: Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, tabled the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023, in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The opposition members vehemently objected to the introduction of the bill, arguing that it infringes upon the fundamental right to privacy. They demanded that the bill should undergo scrutiny by the standing committee. They pointed out that the government had withdrawn a data protection bill last year, and they believe the new bill requires a more thorough examination.
Vaishnaw stated that it is not a money bill and that the opposition’s concerns will be addressed during the debate.
The bill provides for digital personal data to be processed in a way “that recognizes both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need to process such personal data for lawful purposes.”
