New Delhi, July 17: As a result of the island nation’s political upheaval, the Asia Cup is likely to be moved, according to SLC secretary Mohan de Silva, who also suggested that the competition would be held in the UAE. For weeks, there have been large-scale anti-government protests in Sri Lanka, which is struggling with an economic crisis.

However, Ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s flight out of the nation on a military jet made the matter worse.

“The Asia Cup is very likely that it will be held in the UAE,” Sri Lanka Cricket secretary de Silva said when asked about a possible change in the venue of the T20 tournament.

The six-team tournament is anticipated to take place from August 26 to September 11 on the same dates as previously planned.

Before the main tournament, there will also be a qualifier, with Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, and the UAE competing for the one qualifying berth. The five teams will consist of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

There were expectations that the SLC could be able to host the continental event because the Australia tour of Sri Lanka was going well and Pakistan is now playing Test cricket in Sri Lanka.

For the Asian teams, the competition is a useful warm-up for the T20 World Cup in Australia in October–November. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is anticipated to make an official statement regarding the change in tournament location soon. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, is in charge of the ACC.
