India secured its first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with para-athlete Sharmila Dhankhar becoming the first Indian to win gold in para athletics, while high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, weightlifter Valluri Ajay Babu and Gyaneshwari Yadav each claimed silver medals for the country.
Dhankhar Ends India’s 20-Year Wait for Para Athletics Medal
Sharmila Dhankhar clinched gold in the women’s shot put F57 event with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, becoming the first Indian to win gold in Commonwealth Games para athletics. Her victory also ended India’s 20-year wait for a medal in the event, with the country’s last such medal having come from Ranjeet Kumar Jayaseelan in 2006.
Shilpa Shayla Wins Bronze After Nigerian Foul Reversal
In the same event, India’s Shilpa Shayla also secured a bronze medal. She was initially placed fourth, but following an objection raised by India, officials ruled one of the Nigerian athlete’s throws a foul, moving Shilpa up to third place and securing her the bronze.
Valluri Ajay Babu Continues Family Legacy with Silver
In the men’s 79kg weightlifting event, Valluri Ajay Babu won silver with a total lift of 330 kg, finishing just one kilogram short of gold, which went to Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad with a lift of 331 kg. Notably, Ajay Babu’s father, Srinivas Rao, had also won a bronze medal for India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, with the son now extending the family’s Commonwealth Games legacy with a silver of his own.
Kushare and Yadav Add to India’s Medal Tally
High jumper Sarvesh Kushare and Gyaneshwari Yadav also won silver medals in their respective events, further strengthening India’s overall medal count at the Games, giving India’s campaign strong momentum at the Commonwealth Games.
