Assam floods: Death toll rises to 101, over 54 lakh affected

Guwahati, June 23: Over 54.5 lakhs people are still affected by the flooding in Assam, and 12 more fatalities have been confirmed, according to officials. 101 people have died as a result of the flood since mid-May, they reported.

Large areas of land remained under water in 32 of the state’s 36 districts, and the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries, are in spate in the majority of the affected districts. However, other areas saw a decrease in the flood levels.

The advisory states that during the day, the NDRF, SDRF, and other organisations evacuated 3,658 people around the state using 276 boats.

An official reported that the NDRF has saved around 14,500 marooned individuals in Assam’s 12 flood-affected districts.

According to its assistant commandant Santosh Kumar Singh, the 1st Battalion Disaster Response Force of the NDRF sprang into rescue operations in the affected districts and deployed more than 70 boats and 400 troops in the severely flooded districts.

Since Tuesday, he claimed, 207 people in eight more teams from various battalions have been evacuated to Silchar.

In total, 2,32,002 people in 565 villages in the Cachar district, 2,81,271 in 469 villages in Karimganj, and more than 51,000 in 98 villages in Hailakandi have been affected by the flood. In 32 districts across the state, a total of 54,57,601 people were impacted.

According to a report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Thursday, Barpeta, which has 11,29,390 impacted residents, is the worst hit district. Kamrup is next with 7,89,496 affected residents, followed by Dhubri with 5,97,153, and Nagaon with 5,03,450.

According to Singh, the NDRF is carrying out the rescue operations in the following locations: Kamrup, Kamrup Rural, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Hojai, Nalbari, Darang, Tamulpur, Nagaon, Udalguri, and Cachar.
