Assam floods: Nine die including three kids in last 24 hours, over 42 lakh affected

New Delhi, June 20: The flood situation in Assam worsened, with nine more people killed, including three children, bringing the total death toll to 71. Six people died in floods, while three others died in landslides. Cachar district was the site of all three landslide-related deaths.

In addition, at least eight persons have gone missing. On Sunday evening, the number of flood victims in the state surpassed 42 lakh. Cachar district reported three deaths, Barpeta reported two deaths, and Bajali, Kamrup, Karimganj, and Udalguri districts each reported one fatality.

While four persons have gone missing in Dibrugarh, one person has gone missing in each of the districts of Cachar, Hojai, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. As a result, the overall number of people killed in this year’s floods and landslides has risen to 71.

Assam has been ravaged by devastating floods caused by persistent rain, with over 5,137 villages submerged. The worst-affected district is Barpeta, which has over 12.76 lakh people affected, followed by Darrang, which has almost 3.94 lakh people affected, and Nagaon, which has over 3.64 lakh people affected. The flood victims claim they’ve given everything to God because things are just getting worse.

In Central Assam’s Nagaon district, two police officers were washed away in storm waters on Sunday night.The incident occurred late Sunday night in the Kampur neighbourhood.

According to authorities, when a team from Kampur police station led by the Officer-in-Charge went to investigate a case late Sunday night, two members of the squad, including the Officer-in-Charge, were washed away by flood waters.

The body of a constable has been found, but the Kampur police station’s Officer-in-Charge remains missing.
