New Delhi, Sept 10: After the final game of the current series against New Zealand in Cairns on Sunday, Aaron Finch confirmed his retirement from one-day internationals. He will continue to lead the T20I team as they defend their World Cup title in a month.

Finch remarked, “It has been a terrific voyage with some incredible memories. “I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many individuals behind the scenes. I have also been tremendously lucky to be a member of some fantastic one-day sides.” he continued.

In 50-over cricket this year, Finch has had a terrible run of form, scoring only 169 runs at an avergae of 13, and had five of his previous 12 innings end in a duck, including one two days ago in Cairns. He has scored 26 runs in his past seven innings.

Longing to play his final ODI at the 2023 World Cup in India, he revealed on Sunday that he had begun to consider this choice prior to the Zimbabwe series in Townsville and had come to the conclusion that the event was out of reach. He has a bothersome shoulder, albeit his latest knee ailment is not causing any serious problems.

After Australia won the trophy for the first time last year, he will now attempt to defend the T20 title on home soil in what may be the concluding phase of his international career.

Prior to the commencement of their T20 World Cup campaign against New Zealand at the SCG on October 22, Australia has eight T20 Internationals (plus an additional warm-up match against India) for Finch to attempt and find some form.
