New Delhi, Aug 12: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has designated a window in March 2023 for the inaugural season of the women’s Indian Premier League (IPL), according to board president Sourav Ganguly.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI has adjusted the domestic women’s cricket schedule to create room for the women’s IPL. The women’s season, which typically runs from November to April, has been moved up one month, beginning on October 11 with a T20 match and concluding in February 2023 with an inter-zonal ODI match.
The BCCI has been running the Women’s T20 Challenge since 2018. What in the initial season was a lone exhibition game between two teams has evolved into a three-team battle. The competition now includes a large number of players from nations other than India. However, players and fans have been calling for a much bigger competition that is similar to the men’s IPL for some time.
The women’s IPL will take place in 2019, according to a statement made by Ganguly earlier this year in February. The Knight Riders Group, owners of the IPL teams Rajasthan Royals and Barbados Royals, has expressed interest in taking part in the competition and owning a women’s IPL team. Three teams, including the Knight Riders Group-owned Trinbago Knight Riders, will compete in the first women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which will take place concurrently with the men’s competition later this year.
At its annual general meeting in September of this year, BCCI is anticipated to hold a discussion on issues pertaining to women’s IPL. The sale of the tournament’s media rights will take up a large portion of the planning process.
