In front of party heavyweights, including Rahul Gandhi, Kharge assumed the presidency of the Congress on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Delhi headquarters of the organisation. Soon after, the members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the top decision-making body of the party, resigned to give Kharge the freedom to assemble his own team.

By the conclusion of the day, the 47-member Steering Committee that will take the place of the CWC had all 20 of its members and 23 of its 24 permanent invitees returned.
