Deoghar, Aug 23: A woman with the rare Bombay blood group has been found in Deoghar.
Bahadi Hembrom, a native of Katoriya block of Banka, a bordering district of Bihar has been suffering from Anemia and was admitted in a private clinic in Deoghar. She was advised to get some units of blood transfused.
Bahadi’s husband took her to the government blood bank in the old hospital near tower chowk. Here, the lab technician first checked the blood of her husband to match but was unsuccessful. Later, Punit Kumar of the blood bank had to resort to test Hembrom’s blood with Antigen H kit. The result declared that Hembrom had the Bombay blood group.
The in-charge of Blood Bank Dr Vidhu has confirmed it as rare group and clarified about unavailability of the said group in Deoghar
Although the blood samples of her relatives are being tested, there are only four hundred people in the country that have been identified with the blood group. They are mainly found in Mumbai and Gujarat.
It was named so because a patient admitted in King Edward Memorial Hospital of Mumbai in 1952 needed blood. Almost 160 units of blood were tested and at last it was matched with a native of Mumbai. As the donor was from Mumbai (formerly Bombay), the rare blood group was named the same.
