Kolkata, July 21: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed the BJP, alleging that the party is attempting to break all state governments, while speaking at the Shaheed Diwas (Martyr’s Day) rally.

Mamata also attacked the Agnipath programme, which the government introduced last month and which sparked nationwide protests.

“There is no replacement for the army. Do not play with the army…either take people directly into the army or do away with Agnipath,” she said.

“Puffed rice has also got GST. BJP friends will not eat puffed rice now. How much GST has been levied on puffed rice, sweets, lassi, curd, batasha and neem leaves? What will we eat? How will we eat? Return our things or you (BJP) go away,” she further said.

Due to the event, the Kolkata Police have placed restrictions on citywide traffic flow. Schools were also closed. While the Martyrs’ Day march is being held, the state’s health and family welfare department’s standards must be followed, according to a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

Every year on July 21, the TMC commemorates Martyrs’ Day in memory of the 13 individuals who were killed by police gunfire in 1993 during a rally of the Youth Congress, of whom Mamata Banerjee was then the leader.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, and her supporters place a high value on the event because it is on this day that she announces the party’s agenda for the coming year.
