New Delhi: The BJP’s manifesto for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections has sparked a fierce political debate, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the BJP of lacking originality and vision. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal questioned why voters should choose the BJP if it plans to continue the welfare schemes already implemented by his government.
BJP’s Promises and AAP’s Criticism
Union Minister JP Nadda released the BJP’s first of a three-part manifesto, or Sankalp Patra, centered around women’s welfare. The party pledged financial assistance for women, young mothers, and senior citizens, alongside subsidies on cooking gas cylinders. BJP aims to end AAP’s decade-long reign in the capital.
In response, Mr. Kejriwal questioned whether the manifesto had the Prime Minister’s approval, mocking the BJP’s previous criticism of welfare initiatives as “revdi culture.” He urged PM Modi to acknowledge the value of welfare schemes as “God’s prasad” rather than a burden on the country.
“Why vote for BJP to continue the work AAP is already doing?” asked Kejriwal in a scathing remark, branding the BJP’s manifesto a “Kejriwal Patra.”
Law-and-Order Debate
Kejriwal further criticized the BJP’s manifesto for neglecting law-and-order concerns in Delhi. Highlighting rising gang violence, he accused the BJP of having no concrete vision for the capital’s safety and development. “Their Sankalp Patra is false. What work has the BJP done in Delhi over the past 10 years?” he challenged.
BJP’s Counterattack
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva defended the party’s manifesto, differentiating between “freebies” and empowerment. “When we make promises, they focus on development and empowerment. Arvind babu doesn’t understand this difference,” he said. BJP leaders also accused the AAP of corruption, calling the flagship Mohalla Clinics “dens of corruption” and vowing to investigate them if elected.
What’s at Stake?
As the election heats up, the BJP’s promises to continue AAP’s welfare schemes aim to appeal to beneficiaries while framing themselves as the better alternative. Meanwhile, AAP continues to emphasize its track record and grassroots support, questioning BJP’s ability to fulfill its promises.
