NEW DELHI: BJP leaders and workers gathered outside AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s former residence on Feroz Shah Road on Thursday, escalating their criticism over the alleged opulent renovation of his official bungalow, controversially dubbed the “Sheesh Mahal.”
BJP’s Allegations and Demands
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva spearheaded the protest, demanding accountability for the “extravagant” furnishings at Kejriwal’s 6 Flagstaff Road residence in Civil Lines. Accusing Kejriwal of misusing public funds, Sachdeva stated, “Delhi CM should clarify how taxpayers’ money was spent on luxury items for the so-called ‘Sheesh Mahal.’ Transparency is the right of every citizen.”
The BJP highlighted an inventory reportedly prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD), alleging discrepancies between the items listed in 2022 and those found when Kejriwal vacated the bungalow in 2024. These allegedly included premium toilet seats, reclining sofas, high-end carpets, and costly electronics.
Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta also demanded a high-level investigation, writing to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to probe the alleged misuse of funds. Gupta claimed that several luxurious items listed were neither provided by the PWD nor accounted for in official records.
AAP’s Counterattack
The Aam Aadmi Party dismissed the BJP’s claims, calling them baseless and politically driven. In a statement, AAP asserted, “This is just another attempt by the BJP to malign Arvind Kejriwal’s image. Despite numerous investigations, not a single rupee of corruption has been proven against us.”
AAP further emphasized that Kejriwal vacated the residence following his resignation as Delhi Chief Minister, adhering to constitutional norms, unlike many politicians who retain government accommodations beyond their tenure.
The Lingering Controversy
The controversy began earlier this year when documents reportedly prepared by the PWD revealed discrepancies in the furnishings and inventory at Kejriwal’s residence. BJP leaders allege the cost of additional items runs into crores, speculating that funds from the Delhi Jal Board or the controversial excise policy may have been diverted for the lavish upgrades.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva called Kejriwal’s silence on the matter a reflection of the “overflowing pot of sins of the Kejriwal government,” urging immediate clarification and transparency.
