Mumbai, Feb 16: Bappi Lahiri, the veteran music composer and vocalist who popularised disco music in India in the 1980s and 1990s, died today in Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital. He was 69 years old at the time.
“Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called for a doctor to visit their home. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of the hospital, told PTI.
Lahiri was recognised for recreating and sometimes even sampling popular tunes from the international market for his soundtracks, which he was known for.
Though he is well known for his disco-style tunes, he has also composed calmer soundtracks for Bollywood films such as Chalte Chalte and Zakhmee.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the retro king of Bollywood ran from Serampore in West Bengal but didn’t win.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the death of Bappi Lahiri via Twitter.
“Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti, ” the Prime Minister tweeted.
