New Delhi, Aug 27: After narrowly losing to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semifinals on Saturday, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finished the men’s doubles competition of the World Championships with their first-ever bronze medal. The world number 7 Indian team’s deceptive play cost them the match, as they lost 22-20, 18-21, and 16-21 in a thrilling contest that lasted 77 minutes. This ended India’s challenge at the prestigious competition.

Satwik and Chirag had suffered their sixth consecutive loss against the Malaysian duo; earlier this month, they had also fallen to them in the mixed team final of the Commonwealth Games.

Despite the defeat, the young Indian duo put on a respectable performance, ensuring that India has continued to leave the World Championships with a medal since 2011, when Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won the country’s first doubles medal and brought home a bronze.
