New Delhi, Sept 20: Sajjan Kumar, a former Congress MP, and two other accused in a case involving rioting and murder during the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots were acquitted by the Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday.
This case relates to the November 1984 murder of Surjeet Singh in the Sultan Puri locality.
Sajjan Kumar, Brahamanand Gupta, and Ved Prakash were acquitted by special CBI judge Geetanjali Goel on Wednesday.
The CBI registered this case. In sections relating to riots, murder, arson, promoting enmity between communities, etc., the agency had filed a charge sheet.
The Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry was established by the Indian government in 2000 to investigate the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Delhi in 1984.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India) gave the CBI instructions to look into the case against the then Member of Parliament and others after considering the Commission’s report.
Sajjan Kumar was represented by attorneys SA Hashmi and Anil Kumar Sharma. They argued that their accusation was not supported by any evidence and the case had no evidence.
