CBI reopens corruption case against Lalu Yadav and family

Patna, Dec 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reopened a corruption case against former chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav months after the Bihar political reversal in which his party allied with Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) and formed the government, a move that is likely to cause a political uproar.

When Yadav was in charge of the portfolio during the UPA-1 administration, the CBI opened an investigation into claims of corruption in the allocation of Railway projects.

The investigation was finished in May 2021, and according to CBI authorities, ‘no case has been built out of the claims.’ Along with Yadav, the complaint also names his daughters Chanda and Ragini Yadav as well as his son and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav.

After Nitish Kumar broke with the BJP in Bihar and teamed up with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to form the government, the CBI decided to revive the case. At the time, Kumar claimed there was a BJP plot to splinter his party.

As the opposition parties intensify their accusations against the BJP-led central government, the CBI’s latest step is anticipated to ignite a huge political controversy.

According to the lawsuit, Yadav was bribed with a property in south Delhi by the influential real estate company DLF Group, which was also interested in the renovation of the New Delhi Railway Station and rail land lease projects in Mumbai’s Bandra neighbourhood.

A DLF-funded shell firm is accused of purchasing the property for only 5 crore, which is significantly less than the then-current market price of 30 crore. The complaint claims that Tejashwi Yadav and other relatives of Yadav acquired the shell firm after that for just 4 lakh through a share transfer, giving them possession of the south Delhi mansion.

The decision was made as Lalu Yadav is recovering from kidney transplant surgery that was performed earlier this month.
