New Delhi, Dec 11: Almost three months after the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, the Central Government notified the appointment of Justice Dipankar Dutta, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
On September 26, the Supreme Court Collegium approved his appointment to the highest court.
“In exercise of the power conferred under the Constitution of India, Justice Dipankar Datta has been appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India.I extend my best wishes to him”, tweeted Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.

In April 2020, Justice Datta was chosen to serve as the Bombay High Court’s Chief Justice.
Justice Dipankar Datta, who was born in February 1965 is the son of former Calcutta High Court judge Justice Salil Kumar Datta. He obtained his LL.B. degree from the University of Calcutta in 1989 and was enrolled as an Advocate on November 16, 1989.
Before being promoted as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006, he principally practised constitutional and civil law in the Supreme Court and High Courts.
Once Justice Datta takes oath as Supreme Court judge, the working strength of the apex court will rise to 28 as against its sanctioned strength of 34.
