New Delhi, March 12: The Central government has requested a comprehensive action-taken report from the Punjab government about the security lapse that occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on January 5 of last year, According to government sources.

Sources claim that the Punjab government has received a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) requesting a thorough report on the enforcement measures taken against the guilty personnel.

According to information obtained, Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua was directed by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla to submit the action taken report while emphasising the delay in the Punjab government taking corrective action against the ineffective personnel.

Sources claim that the letter, which requested that the findings be shared as quickly as possible, was sent earlier this month.

Anirudh Tewari, the state’s then-chief secretary, S Chattopadhyaya, the police chief, and other top officials were indicted for failing to maintain security during PM Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5, 2022, according to a report from the enquiry committee appointed by the Supreme Court and turned in six months ago.

The MHA established a three-member committee soon after the security breach and called more than a dozen senior Punjab Police officers, including the director general of the Punjab Police, Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, the ADGP for Punjab, the IGP for Patiala, and the DIG for Ferozpur. On January 5, they were in charge of the Prime Minister’s security during his visit to Ferozpur in Punjab.

The MHA then established a three-person committee under the direction of S Suresh, IG, Special Protection Group, Balbir Singh, Joint Director (IB), and Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat.
After the breach in Prime Minister Modi’s security during his visit to Punjab on January 5, the Center is considering taking action under the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act against Punjab Police officers.
The state government is in charge of giving all assistance to the SPG during the PM’s mobility under Section 14 of the SPG Act.
