Ranchi: The Union Home Secretary is set to visit Jharkhand on April 25 to chalk out a strategy aimed at curbing the trafficking of narcotic substances, including opium. During his visit, the Secretary will hold a detailed meeting with senior state officials in Ranchi.
Key agenda points will include reviewing ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug trade, awareness campaigns against substance abuse, and special operations carried out in the state. The Home Department has initiated preparations for the visit, emphasizing inter-departmental coordination and performance review.
The department has also requested reports from district-level authorities on actions taken against drug trafficking between January 1, 2024, and now. These reports will be crucial for the state-wide strategy discussion.
As per police data, Jharkhand has seen intensified action against illegal poppy cultivation. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, law enforcement agencies destroyed large-scale opium crops. By February 2025 alone, around 20,000 acres of illegal opium cultivation had been eradicated.
