New Delhi, July 21: The Opposition criticised the Centre, claiming it is misusing federal agencies to frighten lawmakers speaking out against the government in the wake of Enforcement Directorate questions being asked of Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case.

The Modi administration, according to the opposition, had started a relentless campaign of retaliation against its political rivals and detractors through the cunning use of investigative agencies.

“The Modi govt has unleashed a relentless vendetta against political opponents through the misuse of investigative agencies by targeting prominent leaders of various parties We will intensify our fight against the anti-people Modi Sarkar,” the statement read.

Leaders from a number of groups, including Sanjay Raut from the Shiv Sena and Thol Thirumavalavan from the VCK, signed the declaration. The statement was also signed by leaders from the DMK, RJD, CPI, CPI(M), TRS, and RSP. The floor leaders of the opposition parties met on Thursday in the office of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge before issuing the statement. Participants in the meeting from the Congress, DMK, CPM, CPI, IUML, NC, TRS, MDMK, NCP, Shiv Sena, and RJD were among the political parties.

Congress had also made a similar statement earlier in the day. In the meantime, ahead of Sonia Gandhi’s appearance before the ED in the National Herald case, Congress MPs held a protest outside of Parliament and made their way to the party’s headquarters at 24, Akbar Road.
