Sambhal: The ancient Bhasma Shankar temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal saw the performance of its first aarti in 46 years on Sunday morning, marking a historic and emotional moment for the local community.
The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Hanuman, was rediscovered during an anti-encroachment drive led by district authorities. The shrine, believed to be 400–500 years old, had been shut since the communal riots of 1978.
Temple Rediscovered Amid Encroachment Drive
The ancient temple, located in Sambhal’s Khaggu Sarai area, was found in close proximity to the Shahi Jama Masjid, where communal violence erupted last month. District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya confirmed the discovery of an ancient well at the site, concealed beneath a ramp that was dismantled during the drive.
“The temple and the well are being restored. Action will be taken against those who encroached on the structure. It will be handed over to its rightful community,” Pensiya stated.
Restoration and Security Measures
•Restoration Efforts: The premises were thoroughly cleaned, and electricity arrangements were made before the morning poojaand aarti.
•Security Measures: UP police personnel were deployed at the temple, and CCTV cameras were installed to ensure the safety of the area.
•Historical Assessment: Authorities have written to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to assess and preserve the temple’s heritage.
Sambhal Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vandana Misra emphasized that the anti-encroachment drive targeted only structures built on public property and that the temple would be restored to its original form.
Community Celebrates the Reopening
The reopening of the temple was met with joy and devotion. Acharya Brahm Shukla, who led the prayer ceremony, expressed hope for the appointment of a permanent caretaker for the temple. “Until then, we will take responsibility,” he said.
Rajiv Kumar Gupta, a devotee who visited the temple, remarked on its historical significance. “I had seen this temple years ago. There were dharamshalas around it then, but now only houses remain. Seeing it reopened after so long is heartwarming,” he said.

The temple’s reopening has brought a renewed sense of pride and spiritual connection to the community, as efforts to preserve its history and sanctity continue.
