Chennai, Nov 11: Heavy rains continue to lash Chennai and its nearby areas on Thursday morning, affecting vehicular movement in the city. Incessant rain caused waterlogging in several parts of Chennai.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai on Thursday predicted thunderstorms with heavy to heavy rainfall at isolated places over a few districts of Tamil Nadu within the next few hours.

“These districts are Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram,” the statement said. The department also predicted moderate rain at some places.

“ The Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal lies about 140 km southeast of Chennai. The Depression will cross between north Tamil Nadu and South around Chennai by Thursday evening,” said IMD Chennai’s Deputy Director General S.Balachandran.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep S Bedi said on Wednesday that the city should brace for more rain in the coming days. “We’re expecting more than 250 mm of rain in and around Chennai in the next few days. We’ve taken a lot of steps. We’ve 492 major pumps which are working now,”

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran informed that the death toll due to heavy rainfall in the state stands at 12.

As a precautionary measure, the government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Thursday.
