Raipur: Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma on Saturday revealed that the murder of Bastar journalist Mukesh Chandrakar may be linked to his investigative report on corruption in road construction. Mukesh’s body was discovered in a septic tank at a contractor’s property in Bijapur on Friday, prompting nationwide shock and condemnation.
Special Investigation Team Formed
An 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Mayank Gurjar has been constituted to probe the case. Sharma, who also serves as the state’s home minister, confirmed the arrest of three suspects—Suresh Chandrakar’s relatives Ritesh and Dinesh Chandrakar, along with a farmhouse supervisor, Mahendra Ramteke. However, the main accused, contractor Suresh Chandrakar, remains absconding.
Possible Motive Linked to Corruption Exposé
Sharma highlighted that Mukesh’s murder might be tied to his report on alleged corruption in road construction, aired on December 25, 2024, which prompted an inquiry by Deputy CM Arun Sao. “The corruption implicated Suresh Chandrakar and his associates,” Sharma stated. He added that all possible motives would be investigated.
Political Blame Game Intensifies
Sharma also accused Congress leaders of being frequently linked to criminal cases. “I’m not saying all Congress members are criminals, but why do their names repeatedly surface in such incidents?” he questioned.
Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla countered, claiming Suresh Chandrakar had joined the BJP and was seen with senior BJP leaders. “CCTV footage from the CM House should be made public,” Shukla demanded.
Rapid Investigation and Action
Sharma emphasized swift action, stating, “We aim to file the chargesheet within three to four weeks and will seek a speedy trial.” The authorities have frozen the accused’s bank accounts and demolished his illegally constructed properties, including a yard built on forested land.
Gruesome Details
Mukesh, 33, was reported missing by his brother Yukesh on January 1. His last mobile location led police to a freshly cemented septic tank in Chattanpara Basti, Bijapur, where his body was found. Disturbingly, the main accused, Suresh, is a relative of the deceased and has familial ties with both Mukesh and Yukesh.
Deputy CM Sharma condemned the murder as a “disturbing and brutal” attack, stating it undermines efforts to establish peace in Bastar.
