New Delhi: A political storm erupted on Monday after former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram questioned the alleged Pakistani involvement in the recent Pahalgam terror attack, just hours before Parliament was scheduled to hold a 16-hour-long discussion on Operation Sindoor and national security. Due to uproar in both Houses, proceedings were adjourned until 2 PM.
Controversial Statement Sparks Uproar
In an interview to The Quint, Chidambaram claimed there is “no concrete proof” that the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack came from Pakistan. He said, “The NIA is unwilling to share what steps they have taken. Have they identified the terrorists? Do they know where they came from? What if they were home-grown militants? Why assume they crossed over from Pakistan without any evidence?”
BJP Accuses Congress of Defending Pakistan
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted sharply. Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT cell, slammed Chidambaram on social media platform X, calling him “the architect of the infamous ‘saffron terror’ theory.” Malviya wrote, “Whenever our forces face Pakistan-backed terrorism, Congress leaders sound more like defense lawyers for Islamabad than India’s opposition.”
He added, “Congress is once again in a hurry to give Pakistan a clean chit after the Pahalgam attack. This undermines national unity and the sacrifices of our security forces.”
National Security Back in Political Crossfire
With tensions high in Parliament and public discourse, the BJP is expected to escalate its attack on Congress during the upcoming debate on internal security. Meanwhile, the Congress has not issued an official clarification on Chidambaram’s remarks as of yet.
