China has changed its top military commander managing the contested borders with India. It is the third such change after confrontation in eastern Ladakh since May last year.
General Wang Haijiang was promoted as the new chief of Western Theatre Command (WTC). WTC is the largest theatre command covering all the area of Line of Actual Control (LAC) from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.
“All this is highly unusual. Senior PLA generals, especially those heading the WTC, are not changed so soon or abruptly. We are monitoring the developments” said a senior Indian official.
The world rarely gets to know about the real reasons or implications for changes in China. “The outgoing WTC’s chief abrupt removal in just about two months could be due to three reasons. One, there were corruption charges against him. Two, he was not keeping well. And three, he failed to perform well on the ground in accordance with the direction issued by the Central Military Commission headed by Xi. It’s premature to say what has happened.” said another official.
Frequent changes in the leadership of the WTC somehow indicate that Xi is not satisfied with the performance of the PLA.
