Beijing, Aug 3: China declared on Wednesday that it would stop exporting natural sand to Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island. According to Libijian, the Consul General of China in Karachi, China also reportedly halted imports of citrus fruits, chilled white hairtail, and frozen horse mackerel from the Taiwan region as of Wednesday.

Notably, Pelosi travelled to Taiwan on Tuesday despite repeated security warnings from Beijing. Beijing has insisted that Pelosi’s visit violates both the terms of the joint communiqué between China and the US and the one-China principle. It said that the visit greatly jeopardises the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sends the ‘separatist forces for Taiwan independence’ the wrong message.

Tuesday, shortly after Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taipei, she underlined her nation’s unshakable support for Taiwan’s democracy and stated that this visit does not in any way conflict with long-standing US policy on the autonomous island. Focus Taiwan reported on Tuesday that China had temporarily stopped importing goods from several Taiwanese food enterprises. Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture (COA) confirmed this.

In addition to this, China also announced the halting of natural sand exports to the Taiwan region from Wednesday.
