Beijing, April 3: Despite lockdowns and other tight measures, China registered 13,287 new daily Covid-19 cases on Sunday (April 3, 2022), the largest number since February 2020.
The country, which is experiencing an unprecedented coronavirus outbreak, recorded 1,506 confirmed infections the day before, down from 2,129 the day before, according to the national health authority on Sunday. 1,455 of the latest confirmed cases were locally transmitted, with 956 found in northeastern Jilin province and 438 in Shanghai’s financial district, which has been effectively shut down.
On Saturday, the number of new asymptomatic cases, which China does not identify as confirmed cases, increased to 11,781 from 7,869 the day before.
Shanghai, which has a population of 25 million people, will conduct antigen testing across the city on Sunday and mass nucleic acid testing on Monday.
The city, in particular, has been attempting to curb the epidemic by enforcing a two-stage shutdown, which has caused considerable congestion at Shanghai port, the world’s busiest container transportation centre.
Notably, China saw its greatest epidemic last month since the coronavirus was initially discovered in Wuhan in late 2019. So far this year, the country has reported more local symptomatic Covid-19 cases than it had in all of 2021.
More than 27 Chinese provinces and regions have lately reported coronavirus cases, predominantly the highly transmissible Omicron form, including Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Zhejiang.
