New Delhi, Oct 11: Justice DY Chandrachud has been suggested by outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit to succeed him as CJI.
In this context, CJI Lalit recommended Justice Chandrachud in a letter to the Central government. Chandrachud is expected to serve as chief justice for two years.
In order to give the letter endorsing Justice DY Chandrachud as the new CJI in their presence, the outgoing CJI had earlier today asked for all Supreme Court judges to be present in the judges lounge by 10:15 a.m.
On October 7, the Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju sent a letter to the CJI Secretariat asking for the CJI’s recommendation for his replacement. On November 8, CJI Lalit is scheduled to resign from his position. November 7 will be his last working day on account of it being a public holiday (Guru Nanak jayanti) the next day.
Following the retirement of the previous CJI, NV Ramana, Justice Lalit was appointed to the position on August 27 of this year.
