Coal India Limited celebrates 99th birthday of its first Chairman

Ranchi, April 11: Coal India Ltd. celebrated the 99th birthday of its first Chairman, Dr. Ram Nath Sharma on Monday. CIL chairman Pramod Agrawal and other officials from CIL connected virtually with Dr. Sharma from the CIL headquarters in Kolkata to his residence in Jamshedpur and greeted him on his birthday.

After the nationalisation of coal mines, Dr. Sharma’s services were sought by the government and he joined Coal India Ltd. where he served from 1972 to 1980 as CEO of BCCL, CCL and CMPDI, and finally took over as Chairman of Coal India Ltd.

He is an alumnus of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. After qualifying as a first-class manager, he began his career as a mining engineer with Tata Steel Mining Division in 1949.

He has also headed various Tata Group of companies in the past and have provided consultancy to various organisations. He was also a faculty member at Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad and has served as a member of the governing body of IIM, Calcutta and ISM, Dhanbad.

He continues to work till date, dedicating his time and energy to improving education services as Chairman of Jamshedpur Arya Samaj Trust and at its schools. He is also an avid reader and was also a golfer who continued to play the sport competitively, till 2020.
