New Delhi, March 25: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah will compete from his Varuna seat in the Karnataka assembly elections, according to the first list of 124 candidates released by the Congress on Saturday.

According to the list, Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar would run for office from his Kanakapura assembly district.

Former deputy chief minister G Parameshwara would contest from Koratagere (SC) district. KH Muniappa and Priyanka Kharge, both former ministers, will run from Devanahalli and Chitapur (SC), respectively. Notably,  Priyanka is the son of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

After a meeting in Delhi on March 17, the party’s central electoral committee approved the initial list of candidates. Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the Congress, is the committee’s chairman. At the meeting, Rahul Gandhi was also in attendance.

The Congress is the first party to announce its schedule of candidates for the Karnataka elections. The Election Commission has not yet released a timeline for the southern state’s assembly elections. Before May, when the present assembly’s term ends, elections for the Karnataka assembly are scheduled.
