New Delhi: Amid controversies over remarks by some Congress leaders on the Pahalgam terror attack, the party leadership has urged its members to avoid making unnecessary statements. Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh clarified that individual remarks do not reflect the official position of the party.
Leadership Emphasizes Official Line
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have already conveyed the party’s stance, stressing unity and full support to the Centre during this sensitive time. Jairam Ramesh reiterated that only the Congress Working Committee’s (CWC) resolution and statements by authorized AICC office-bearers represent the party’s official stand.
Siddaramaiah’s Remarks Spark Controversy
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah drew criticism for stating that he was not in favour of waging war against Pakistan. He later clarified that war should be the last resort and emphasized support for diplomatic measures initiated by the Centre, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Further Embarrassment From Congress Leaders
Karnataka Excise Minister RB Timmapur courted controversy by questioning reports that terrorists asked victims’ religion before shooting. Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar also made similar remarks, suggesting terrorists don’t have time to inquire about religion during attacks. These comments were strongly countered by BJP leaders, who accused Congress leaders of downplaying the brutality of the Pahalgam attack.
BJP Intensifies Attack On Congress
BJP leaders, including CR Kesavan and Anurag Thakur, lambasted Congress leaders for their remarks, accusing them of indirectly defending Pakistan. BJP MP Milind Deora criticized Vijay Wadettiwar for showing misplaced sympathies, recalling his controversial statements during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks as well.
Saifuddin Soz’s Statement Deepens Row
Adding fuel to the fire, Congress veteran Saifuddin Soz suggested that India should temporarily accept Pakistan’s denial of involvement and focus on dialogue. BJP leaders swiftly condemned Soz, accusing him of being sympathetic towards a rogue nation.
Congress Leadership Moves To Contain Damage
Facing growing backlash, Congress leadership is now attempting to enforce strict discipline among its leaders to avoid further controversies that could damage the party’s image ahead of critical elections.
