New Delhi: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has come to the defense of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who has faced criticism for demanding DNA tests of the two men accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in Ayodhya. Dikshit, the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, stated that DNA testing has been a standard investigative tool in such cases.

“Akhilesh Yadav’s call for DNA tests is based on established practices used to identify and verify suspects,” Dikshit told PTI. “There’s nothing wrong with what he is suggesting. However, it is unfortunate that in Uttar Pradesh, such incidents are often politicized rather than being treated as matters of justice.”

Dikshit further alleged that when the accused are linked to the ruling BJP, efforts are made to cover up the case. “The Uttar Pradesh government has become an instrument of political games between parties rather than focusing on dispensing justice,” he remarked, describing the state’s current affairs as “very sad.”

Akhilesh Yadav ignited a controversy on Saturday by demanding a DNA test for the accused in the Ayodhya rape case. “Without a DNA test in the Bhadarsa case of Ayodhya, BJP’s allegation will be considered biased,” Yadav stated.

The BJP responded by accusing the Samajwadi Party of defending a “paedophile” and exhibiting a “boys will be boys” mentality.

On Sunday, Yadav urged the court to provide protection for the rape victim, considering the case’s sensitivity. He emphasized that those attempting to politicize the case should not succeed.

“The government should ensure the best possible medical care for the rape survivor. It is the government’s responsibility to protect the girl’s life,” Yadav said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also requested the court to take suo motu cognizance of the situation to ensure the girl’s safety and prevent the politicization of the incident.

This incident has highlighted the ongoing political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, where justice often becomes entangled in political rivalries. Both Yadav and Dikshit emphasize the importance of focusing on justice for the victim rather than allowing political agendas to overshadow the case.
