Mumbai, April 12: Deepak Chahar’s back injury has all but ended his chances of playing in the upcoming IPL 2022, increasing to the woes of Chennai Super Kings.
The defending champions, who entered the event without Chahar, their strike bowler, have lost all four of their matches so far in the 10-team league and are at the bottom of the points standings. While CSK had always stated that their 14 crore acquisition would be healthy by the second week of April, the severity of the rupture meant that ‘no prospect of his availability’ in the tournament.
According to sources, the back injury occurred while the India and CSK bowler was undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Chahar has been rehabbing at the NCA for nearly a month after suffering a quadricep rupture during India’s T20I series against the West Indies in February. He was expected to miss the most of the IPL, but his fast recuperation has kept CSK hopeful of a late April return.
In February, the bowling all-rounder injured his quadriceps and had to leave the field after failing to complete his spell in the third T20I against the West Indies.
The 29-year-old, who was purchased for 14 crore in the super auction, was forced to withdraw from the next series against Sri Lanka. Chahar, who can also hit big shots, was instrumental in the team’s triumph last season.
