Jamshedpur, May 31: The 17- days of various sports and fitness events organised as a part of a summer camp organised by Tata Steel’s sports department at the sprawling JRD Tata Sports Complex came to an end today.

The summer camp, which kick-started on May 15, was an attempt to promote young talents and also provide recreation for the children.

“We are happy that the summer camp resumed after two years. The camp could not be held during the past two years due to the pandemic. The participating children enjoyed the camp. One of the attractions was Zumba which saw good participation of girls and women. We are going to make it a regular affair,” said Ashish Kumar, head of Tata Steel’s sports department at the closing ceremony of the camp this morning.

Archery coach Purnima Mahato and former Ranji player Avinash Kumar also motivated the participants of the camp in their address during the closing function. Parents too had fun at the camp as various contests were organised for them. Winners were also given away prizes.

A blood pressure check-up camp was also organised for the parents.

Officials of Tata Steel’s sports department said that children can enrol themselves in regular classes in various sports disciplines. Parents applauded the role of the sports department in organising the sports camp and giving children the opportunity to participate in multiple sporting activities.

“The camp aims at the holistic development of children and youth, and boosts the morale of the participants, ” said a parent.

Around 2000 children had registered for the various sporting activities across 20 disciplines such as archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, chess, cricket, football, golf, handball, horse riding, karate, kabaddi, roller skate/roll ball, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, yoga and Zumba.

Experienced coaches from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), international athletes and former Ranji players imparted training to the participants in the 17-day camp.

Notably, for Tata Steel sports is a way of life and the company has been promoting and encouraging sports for nearly a century now.

The company’s commitment towards the promotion of sports is manifested through several academies of excellence such as Tata Football Academy, Tata Archery Academy, Naval Tata Hockey Academy, Tata Sport Climbing Academy, and Tata Steel SAI Athletics  Boxing Excellence Centres and many more.
