New Delhi, Aug 7: Eldhose Paul, who won the gold medal in the men’s triple jump with a best jump of 17.03 metres, and Abdulla Aboobacker, who won the silver medal with a jump of 17.02 metres, finished one-two on the podium for India. India nearly pulled off a clean sweep, but Praveen Chitravel came in fourth and narrowly missed the podium.

With his third jump, the only one of his six attempts to clear the 17-meter mark Paul took the lead.

Aboobacker maintained a steady improvement throughout the competition and, with his fifth attempt, he moved into the silver medal position.

Chitravel gave it his all, but he was unable to surpass Bruneian Jah-Nhai Perinchief’s 16.92m leap. Perinchief ruined the Indian celebration by winning the bronze.

This is India’s first athletics gold medal at CWG 2022 thus far. India’s overall athletics results have significantly improved since 2018, and more medals are still anticipated.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu congratulates Eldhose Paul for claiming gold and Abdulla Aboobacker for winning silver in triple jump.

History created! Heartiest congratulations to Eldhose Paul for claiming gold & Abdulla Aboobacker for winning silver in triple jump at #CommonwealthGames. It was splendid to see our country's domination, both finalists being from India. This rare feat will be cherished for long.
