New Delhi, July 29: The Indian women’s table tennis team made a winning start by defeating South Africa 3-0 on Friday in Birmingham, beginning their Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign with a spotless performance.
Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison, representing India in the doubles competition, defeated Lailaa Edwards and Danisha Patel, representing South Africa, 11-7, 11-7, and 11-5.
As the next player in the singles match, Manika Batra defeated Musfiquh Kalam 11-5, 11-3, and 11-2 before Sreeja Akula defeated Danisha Patel once more 3-0 to end the match.
At 8.30 p.m., the women’s squad will play Fiji. At 4.30 p.m., the men’s team will take on Barbados.
The men’s table tennis team is playing Barbados and now has a comfortable 2-0 lead. Taniya Choudhury, however, got off to a bad start in the women’s singles Lawn Bowls competition, losing to Scotland’s Dee Hoggan 21-10.
